End of year lists are a habit us bloggers like to indulge in (that and making predictions for the new year), so here’s mine. I’ve been pretty unimaginative with the categories I’m afraid.
1. Album of the Year: Django Django: “Django Django“
2012 was the year that Django Django finally delivered the debut album we had been waiting for since their excellent singles in 2010, and it was brilliant
Honourable mention: Gregory & The Hawk: “Come, Now“;
2. EP/ Single of the Year: s/ s/ s: “Beak & Claw”
Rapper Serengeti, producer Son Volt and indie experimenter Sufjan Stevens came together to make a record, complete with a song about the Octomom.
Honourable Mention: The Revival Hour “Clusterchord”
3. Live Act of the Year: tUNE-yARDS
At the end of a mammoth tour, Merrill Garbus brought her show back to the UK this summer, where we caught it during a sunny evening at the otherwise rainy Green Man Festival.
Honourable Mention: St Vincent
4. New Band of the Year: The Revival Hour
This month will see the release of Scorpio Little Devil, the debut album from this collaboration between DM Stith and John-Mark Lapham, formerly of The Earlies. The Clusterchord EP came out last year, and they visited the UK on tour (the picture above is from their Bristol show), so I think they count for 2012. The music is very persuasive (and quite odd) soulful rock that recalls depression era spiritualist music, albeit in quite an indirect way.
Honourable Mention: OLO Worms
Interesting list Matt, thanks. Have to admit that the few albums that bowled me over in 2012 were actually from 2010. I was just a bit late to the party.
