Cardiff-based Sad Cypress is back with “Three Wishes,” a dramatic new single arriving on 30 October, just in time for Halloween. It follows two well-received earlier releases.
The track opens on a plucked acoustic motif that swirls like something in dark water, set inside a richly detailed atmosphere. Her vocal is suitably haunting, with echoes of later-period Kate Bush and the vaudeville melodrama of Shakespears Sister. Dark folk shades and almost classical arpeggios run through the song, and the shivering vocal hints at whatever lurks beneath the surface, sketching a vivid set of questions and leaving a few of your own behind.
Sad Cypress describes the song as “a hall of mirrors”: what do we want, and why do we want it? She says she can see lots of different interpretations and expects to discover more.
