Downeaster – The Alternative Sauce EP – 01.01.11
Bringing a new year in with three crisp, powerpop tunes; London’s Downeaster describe their sound as ” the love children of Rivers Cuomo and Jimmy Webb”. Blimey, what an enduring picture for the geek-loving indie kid! However, it’s one that fires pretty close to the mark if you’re looking for a point of reference. File under ‘M’ for melodic and pour a bit on your stereo!

The Lionheart Brothers – The Desert
Dreamy lo-fi pop from Norway dipped in psychedelia. Taken from their forthcoming new album. I daresay we’ll be making a song and dance about that soon too!

The High Wire – Pump Your Little Heart – 07.02.11
The rather charmingly-named The High Wire have garnered comparisons with The Kissaway Trail and on the strength of this song: certainly play in the orchestral pop playground. Reluctant as I am to use words like lush – it does seem to fit. The production is as spare as it is precise and the sound is full without being overcrowded. Extra points for the boy/girl vocal dynamic we’re big fans of too.

Malachi( feat Katy Wainwright) Rainbows
Eerie, sultry lo fi-hip hop in the vein of Skinny (remember them?) or Nightmares on Wax. Taken from their forthcoming second album Return To The Ugly Side out on 28th February on Domino records.
